ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION
Frozen semen and embryos conservation for a successive use in the insemination processes offers many opportunities in the veterinary and medical field.

BIOLOGY
Liquid nitrogen is used for the long-time conservation of biologic or biological origin materials in specific “dewar” containers.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
In several fields of the scientific research it is necessary to operate at lower temperatures and liquid nitrogen in many cases is the most suitable way.

VETERINARY AND PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY
Some types of vaccines are stored in liquid nitrogen.

CRYOSURGERY

Cryosurgery is a type of surgery based on using extremely low temperatures in order to destroy abnormal or diseased tissues. This process doesn’t usually require anesthesia and does not cause scars or require difficult dressings or long periods of recovery after treatments.

BLOOD AND ORGANS BANKS
In order to carry out blood transfusions, especially in case of rare blood groups, blood is stored in liquid nitrogen by special boxes shielded in metal cases which are necessary to prevent damage during the freezing. The same system is also used to store organs for transplants.

ASTRONOMY
Liquid nitrogen is used to have a constant flaw of vapor on optical surface to prevent the deposit of dust or condensation on the lenses. Liquid nitrogen is adopted as refrigerating for detectors, which method is used to increase performance and decrease the “noise”.

FOOD FREEZING
In the industrial sector, certain foodstuffs are treated with liquid nitrogen that “blocks” the food flavor through the speed of the freezing process. In addition, in the grinding of numerous foods, liquid nitrogen is selected to absorb the heat generated by friction that could cause excessive heating of the product resulting in melting and degradation.

ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY
The extreme cold ensured by liquid nitrogen is used to produce a shock to the parts to assemble in order to avoid imperfections in electrical connections. The inert atmosphere resulting from the gaseous nitrogen ensures that there is no contamination by dust or oxidation during the production process.

CHEMICAL INDUSTRY
Several chemical products (plastics, medicines and insecticides) undergo grinding at low temperature.

MECHANICAL INDUSTRY
In the iron and steel industry, liquid nitrogen is used to cool the slags, for cryogenic quenching, in shrinking and extrusion techniques.

ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY
Liquid nitrogen can be used to condense and retain emissions of volatile organic compounds in manufacturing plants, improving air quality in industrial areas.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY
In the excavation of tunnels or wells in damp soils it is possible to freeze the soil to prevent flooding and allowing employees to work safely.

COMPUTERS
In some cases liquid nitrogen was adopted to cool supercomputer hardware components. This technical solution is now used in the amateur field also for PCs.

FIRE EXTINGUISHING
In case of very difficult fire to extinguish, it has been discovered that the most effective foams are those that use nitrogen instead of air.

RUBBER INDUSTRY
Nitrogen is used as an inert atmosphere in storage and as an additive in the production of synthetic rubber, in the rubber cold grinding, hardening and cooling.

PRINTING INDUSTRIES, PHOTOGRAPHIC LABORATORIES
Nitrogen is employed in the development and printing of color photography.

DISINFESTATION
Nitrogen, gaseous or liquid, is used for the decontamination of environments and for the treatment of objects where infesting species such as bedbugs, fleas and others can settle. Disinfection with liquid nitrogen is eco-friendly, economical and very effective.

Liquid nitrogen is also used in chromatography, pisciculture, fruit growing, wine industry, shipyards, power plants, paint factories, etc.
